Yes, Karachi does have surfing activities, though it's still an emerging scene that's quite different from mainstream surf destinations.
Wave riders on the south coast of Pakistan, just outside of Karachi, are determined to go pro despite a lack of equipment and poor conditions. Riding a wave of perseverance, the Surfers of Bulleji are attracting a social media following.
Attiq ur Rehman and his team, 'Surfers of Bulleji' (IG@surfers_of_bulleji), dare to ride the waves at Hawkes Bay Beach despite lacking proper equipment. Started in 2021 with just 5 members, this Karachi-based surf club has grown to over 50 young enthusiasts. But their journey isn't without challenges - their surf boats, gifted by Australian surfers, are seized by Pakistan's customs department, who demand bribes for release, according to Rehman.
The main surfing location in Karachi is Hawkes Bay Beach, located about an hour's drive from central Karachi. The waves here are most suitable for surfing during the monsoon season, typically from June to September, when the Arabian Sea produces consistent swells.
There's a growing community of local surfers who are passionate about developing the sport. They often organize lessons for beginners and have created informal networks to share equipment and knowledge. Some local surf instructors have even received training from international surfing organizations.
Attiq believes that with enough support, him and his team can go pro and reach the olympics. This piece is an appreciation of their efforts to establish and spread awareness of surfing in Pakistan.
